Chapter 12

On an unusually hot and boring Thursday afternoon in Luminare, Brittany was walking outside the neighborhood blockade in an ugly field. Antonio would not be home for several hours. She felt more alone than she ever had in her life, imagining she might be here for a very long time. She sat down in the field, exasperated, and a tear fell from her eye.

She lifted her thoughts to God and whispered a prayer. “Oh God, I do not know you, but I need you. I don’t belong here!”

Then it happened.

She was sitting alone in the desolate field, looking out at the horizon, which was covered with clouds as usual. Suddenly, a sliver of sunlight burst through the clouds and struck her, beaming directly onto her face. She looked up, feeling the first ray of warmth and hope she had felt for a long time.

“God?” she asked quietly, trying not to be heard or noticed by the people or the Dark Angels milling about nearby.

A quiet voice stirred within her. She heard it clearly. “Brittany, I love you, and I am going to rescue you. Be patient, though; your rescue will be part of a larger plan.”

Her heart raced. Oh my God! Oh my God! She jumped up as the ray of sun faded. She was going to get out. God himself was going to save her. He had spoken to her. She had heard his voice in her head. She was so happy.

She raced home, as excited as she had ever been in her life, and started cleaning up the dismal house. She had renewed hope for the future. The idea of Antonio didn’t bother her anymore. If anything, she felt sorry for him. All day long, the thought kept running through her mind. I’m going to be okay. I’m going to get out of here.

Before the first Heavenly War, Antonio was one of Splendora’s favorite Host Commanders. But like all of the other Dark Angels in Luminare, he had been deceived. All of the over 233,000 Angels who followed Luminé and Oxana to Luminare were deceived. They had never been told they could not go back. Even the dome had been thrust upon them through deception. They had been tricked into the battle with the Angels of God and paid for it by being cast into Luminare forever.

Despite all this, Antonio and the other leaders still trusted Luminé. They had no one else to trust. Luminé laid out what he called strategic initiatives, part of his many-faceted plans to get them out of Luminare. Kidnapping the transports to the 4th Level of the Land of Reform, though more than anything meant to be a diversion, was part of Luminé’s overall plan.

Deep down, though, they were all wary and slowly getting tired of Luminé and Oxana. Rumors were cautiously spreading that they would be better off begging for mercy from the Lords of Heaven than trying to break their way out. Now, Legion was rising. He
